OBITUARY

MRS. CARRIE ROSS HORTON

Dr. Guy L. Horton of Osage was in the city Monday and communicated the information that his mother, Mrs. Carrie Horton, died at his home in Osage, Iowa, on August 14 after a lingering illness resulting from an affection of the spinal cord. The news is received by friends of the deceased with profound regret. Mrs. Horton was a daughter of T. J. Ross, who was one of the leading citizens of story county for the earlier thirty years of its organized existence, having been first elected county treasurer in 1859. She was born and reared in Nevada and graduated from the Nevada high school in 1878. A year and a half later she was married to Sidney C. Horton, who was then an active and promising young business man here; but a few years later he went away, leaving her with two young children, a daughter and a son. She also was away from Nevada several years but returned and in the early '90s lived on the corner where the Lowrey Griffith homestead now stands. Later she lived for a long time at Ames and then went to Iowa City, where her son Guy studied dentistry. Meanwhile the daughter Bessie married and became Mrs. J. F. Keating of Lansing, Michigan. After the son's graduation he located at Osage, where she made his home for him and where she has now died as stated.

Mrs. Horton was 56 years of age and was of much attractiveness and worth. She is remembered with warm regard by those who were her associates in youth. She was buried at Osage.
