Alonzo Baker was born in Monroe township, Licking county, Ohio, April 30, 1842, of American parentage being the third child of Aaron Baker and Delilah Ashbrook Baker. He remained in his parental home until after reaching manhood when he went west where he spent a couple years. then he went south and staid about the same length of time, coming to Iowa in 1868. On September 9, 1872 he was married to Miss Roxana Kraiger at Iowa City. Seven children were born to them, two of whom died in infancy. He moved with his family to New Albany Township, Story county in March 1877 and has lived on what is still the home place in south east New Albany for thirty eight years. Mr. Baker was a man of sturdy constitution until about four years ago when he was overtaken by a rheumatic trouble which has kept him confined to his home ever since. Pat of the time he has endured intense suffering. Of the days and night of pains no one can realize as well as the faithful wife and daughter Lila who have so tenderly and constantly cared for him during the years of affliction. Until stricken by disease Mr. Baker was an energetic, capable farmer, an honest business man. During his entire life he was a staunch adherent to the democratic party. He had been a loyal member of the Masonic fraternity of the Eden Lodge at Rhodes for over twenty-five years.
Mr. Baker died at his home Wednesday May 31, 1916 aged seventy-four years, one month and one day. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife and five children: G. P. Baker of Bancroft, Iowa; Miss Bertha Baker of Mexico City, Mexico; Clarence Baker of Portland, Maine; and Fred and Lila at home. All were at his bedside during the last days excepting, Miss Bertha and Clarence. He is also survived by four sisters living in Ohio, two half sisters and a half brother in Indiana, besides a host of neighbors and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the home at 2 o'clock p. m. Friday, June 2 by the Masonic fraternity in charge of Grand Master W. C. Heintz with delegations from Rhodes, Colo and Collins. Burial rites were performed at the grave in the Colo Cemetery where the remains were tenderly laid to rest beneath beautiful flowers and Masonic Emblems. The entire community extend heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing relatives.
