Last Rites for P. S. O'Neil Were Held Sunday

Last rites for the late P. S. O'Neil, native son of Story county who had lived his entire life in Story county, were largely attended at the Ryan Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon where the funeral service was in charge of the Reverend O. E. Cooley of the Nevada Methodist church.

The many beautiful floral pieces which banked the bier, were silent testimonials to the respect and affection in which the deceased was held.

Mrs. Norman C. Dobson was at the organ playing appropriate hymns and accompanying when Wayne Cooley sang the "Lord's Prayer" at the close of the service.

The pall bearers were H. M. Vinsel, Ben Severeid, Gus Ludwig, W. H. Handsaker, Roger Griffith and E. C. Wendel.

Committal was in the Ames cemetery.

The following brief life history of the diseased [sic] was read by Rev. Cooley:

"Philip Sheridan O'Neil, son of John and Nancy* O'Neil, was born in Story county March 9, 1869, passed away at his home in Nevada on October 2, 1946. On March 27, 1894 he was married to Belle Koons. To this union four daughters were born. Two of these, Mrs. Marie Coonley and Mrs. Ruth Hawley are deceased. The two living daughters are Mrs. Mabel Madison and Mrs. Myrna Nevaril, both of Seattle, Wash. and were both at the funeral service.

Mr. and Mrs. O'Neil started their married life on a farm where they lived until 1905. About that time Mr. O'Neil suffered injury from very severe burns. Because of the permanent nature of the accident Mr. and Mrs. O'Neil left the farm first going to Colo later living for a short period in Kansas and then back to Colo. They came to Nevada in 1939.

"Besides his wife and two daughters he leaves one brother, Chas. O'Neil of Nevada. Also six grandchildren and two great grand children.

"Mr. O'Neil had had scarcely a well day during the last 40 years and yet throughout the years he maintained a cheerfulness which served as inspiration to others who perhaps had far less to fret about than he did. On one occasion he remarked that had it not been that he was given a sense of humor he would have died years ago.

"His life can best be described, by the remainder, that he did like people. One every occasion it seem that he met his friends both new and old with a radiant cheerfulness. He was trustworthy and obliging. He loves his home and family and tried to do what he could in sharing life's responsibilities with them."

A large number of friends from all over Story county and elsewhere were in attendance at the last rites.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Philip Sheridan O'Neil was the son of John O'Neil and Mary French, not Nancy as stated.
