OBITUARY

MRS. J. E. BROOKS

Mrs. Mary J. Brooks, wife of Jos. E. Brooks, died at her home in this city Saturday morning after a protracted illness, aged 58 years, 7 months and 24 days. Her death was a great grief to family and friends; but to none of them was it any sense a surprise, and it came indeed not as a shock but as a release from suffering.

Mary J. Lawman, was eldest daughter of John and Violet Lawman, long residents of this city and she was born at Rockford, Illinois, June 3, 1858. When she was four years of age she removed with her parents to Canada but a few years later returned to Illinois and there remained until the spring of 1876, when the family settled on a farm four and a half miles northeast of Nevada. She was married February 12, 1878, to Joseph E. Brooks of Nevada, and her husband and herself lived for one year on a farm north of Nevada. They then removed to Stoughton, Wisconsin, where they lived for twelve years, returning to reside here until her death, which occurred Saturday, January 27, 1917, at 7 a. m. To Mr. and Mrs. Brooks were born two daughters, Violet, who died April 22, 1901, and Ella, wife of Sam Lough of this city. The immediate surviving relatives are her husband, her daughter and the latter's husband and daughter Jane; her sisters Martha (Mrs. Nathan) Kelly of Granada, Minn., Margaret (Mrs. J. T.) Handsaker of Colo, Linda (Mrs. Frank A.) Boynton of Bangor, Mich., and one brother, Thomas Lawman of Rodman, Iowa.

Mrs. Brooks was a woman of much capability and most admirable character. She met well her responsibilities in life and was greatly esteemed by all who knew her. She had been long identified with the Lutheran church and her funeral was conducted Monday afternoon by the pastor, Rev. F. R. Shirck. The local church edifice, however, being temporarily out of use the funeral was conducted in the Methodist church instead.
