Pioneer Story County Woman Laid to Rest in Community in Which She Had Passed Lifetime

Slater, Nov. 17--Funeral services for Mrs. Cyrus Highland, 86, were held Thursday afternoon 1:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter Mrs. Nels Ihle and 2:00 at the Bethlehem Lutheran church. The services were in charge of her pastor Rev. E. R. Rorem, assisted by Rev. P. Buland of Story City.

The many beautiful floral offerings paid silent tribute to the departed friend. Members of the Legion Auxiliary, Mrs. E. C. Rood, Mrs. Will Schaudt and Mrs. Stanley Mosey arranged the flowers. The pallbearers were N. O. Ihle, John Ihle, Nels Ersland, M----n Helland, Andrew Maland and A. L. Peterson.

The duet "Light of Home" was sung by Miss June W---- and Mrs. A. L. Peterson. H--- ------is sang a solo "God Will Take Care of You" and Mrs. Peterson snag the solo "God Understands."

A large number of gift of money for missions were given by relative and friends to the memory of Mrs. Highland. Burial was made by the side of her husband in the Bethlehem cemetery.

Isabel M. Masker was born July 9, 1853 in Etne, Norway and died Nov. 13, 1939, at the Iowa Soldiers hospital in Marshalltown at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 4 days.

Her parents were George and Kari Masker. When she was nine months old she came to America with her parents and they settled in Lisbon, Ill. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

In 1855 the family joined the group of pioneer who came westward to make their home in Iowa. Her father died enroute to Iowa. The group settled in Polk county.

Her marriage to Peter Johnson took place in 1872 and one child now Mrs. Mrs. Nels Ihle was born to them. Their marriage was short-lived as Mr. Johnson died about a year after their marriage. Her second marriage took place July 14, 1877 when she was married to Cyrus Highland and they made their home on a farm near Slater. They live on this farm for many years and later moved to town. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Highland three of whom, Rasmus, Ella and Gertrude preceded their parents in death. Mr. Highland, a Civil war veteran, die May 31, 1932. Mrs. Highland was an active member in the church and the Ladies' Aid. She was a devoted and loving mother and a faithful friend, her many deeds of kindness and help were extended throughout the community.

She is survived by her children, Mrs. Nellie Ihle of Slater, Mrs. Carrie Ferguson of Chicago Heights, Ill., Mrs. Godelia Jagerson of Sherburn, Minn., Mrs. Gertrude Webster of Omaha and Elihu Highland of Bricelyn, Minn., 17 grandchildren and a large number of relatives and friends also mourn her death.

Buland, Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Ihle, Mrs. Edward Duea and Torres Nerem of Story City, Miss Julia Gord, Mrs. Rachel Johnson and Miss Rebekah Johnson of Des Moines; Mrs. A. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. T. O. The death of Mrs. Highland marks the passing of this original group of Scandinavian settlers who came into southern Story and northern Polk county in 1855 an 56 and formed what was long known as the South Settlement.
