Masons Serve at Committal of John C. Smith

Funeral rites for the late John C. Smith, 80, who died at his home in Fernald Monday, were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home.

There was a large gathering of relatives ad friends present to pay a tribute of respect to the memory of one whom they had long known and respected.

The service was in charge of Dr. J. O. Simon of Memorial Lutheran church, Nevada. and there were two vocal duets by Mesdames Harold Handsaker and Lee Cook.

Burial was in the family lot in the McCallsburg cemetery, interment being in charge of Nevada Lodge No. 99, A. F. & A. M., of which he was a member. The committal lecture was by Ira Kempkes, a neighbor and personal friend of years standing. Mr. Smith became a member of the Masonic lodge at Zearing over fifty years ago and plans were under way to honor that anniversary in the local lodge.

John C. Smith was born Feb. 7, 1859 and died Aug. 14, 1939 being 80 years, 6 months, 7 days old.

He was born in Marion, Inc., and at the age of six moved with his parents to Iowa in a covered wagon and located near Story City where he grew to manhood.

He was united in marriage to Mary Montgomery, December 13, 1883, and moved to a farm near McCallsburg and lived in that vicinity until 1922 when they move to their present home in Fernald.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife and one sister, Mrs. Bell Ricketts of Ames, the only member left of a family of 7 children.

He united with the Christian church when a young man and was a good neighbor and friend to all who knew him.
