World War Veteran Laid to Rest After Sounding of "Taps"

Maxwell, June 10--The Loring church of near Maxwell was filled to capacity by relatives and friend to pay a last tribute to Sammie Enfield, who died from injuries received in automobile crash. The body was escorted by the Maxwell American Legion post to the Loring church where services were held Tuesday afternoon, June 6, at 2:30 with the Rev. H. D. Robinson of Des Moines in charge. The Legion color guards were R. J. Martin and Jay Alder, color bearers were R. Z. Brown and Geo. Cook. Pall bearers James Ward, Roy Miller, H. C. Larsen, T. J. Sparks, Nick Hostettler and Wm. Joor. After the military services, as the boy was being lowered, a large American flag was presented to his sister, Mrs. George Link in behalf of the local American Legion post and the U. S. government.

Interment was in the Brethren cemetery south of town.

Sam Merle Enfield, son of Samuel and Mary Enfield was born October 6, 1887*, and passed away at the Broadlawns hospital, June 4, 1939. He became a member of the Loring Evangelical church in early childhood. He belonged to the Maxwell Legion post, having served overseas during the World War for 13 months. Sammie was a kind neighbor to all who knew him, always willing to help and serve his fellowmen. He leaves to mourn his departure three brothers and two sisters; Charley of Mondamin, Mrs. Altie Link of Maxwell, Mrs. Mary Eckard [should be Eckerd] of Mullen, Neb., Lloyd of Coon Rapids and Roy of Des Moines. He also leaves
several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. His parents, two sisters and three brothers preceded him in death.
