Last Rites Held Saturday Afternoon For Bert B. Child

Funeral services for Bert B. Child, native son of Nevada, were largely attended at the Memorial Lutheran church in Nevada, Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., with his pastor, the Rev. E. P. Windman, officiating at the simple but very impressive funeral service.

A large number of beautiful flowers banked the front of the church, mute evidence of the affection and esteem in which the deceased was held. The flowers were arranged by Mrs. H. W. Bowers and Mrs. Alice Karges.

Leslie Henderson was at the organ playing a number of the hymns which were death to the deceased and other appropriate music.

The casket bearers were F. C. Tarman, Oscar Hall, John Hattery, Chas. F. Wilson, Harold Tipton and H. M. Vinsel.

Committal was in Nevada's beautiful cemetery by the side of the wife, Ollie, who preceded his in death, July 20, 1947.

Bert Bryson Child [should be Bert Beyson Child] was born February 2, 1871 in Nevada, Iowa to Captain George Child and Levina Hall Child. He passed away July 11, 1951 at his home at 734 10th St., Nevada, at the age of 80 years and five months of a heart ailment of several years duration. He was sixth of eight children born to this pioneer Story county family and lived in Story county almost his whole life.

He was united in marriage to Ollie Stamm on December 16, 1894, who preceded him in death on July 20, 1947, and to this union was born two children who survive him: Mary (Mrs. Jesse Stone) of Glendale, Calif., and Lloyd Child of Nevada. Also surviving are three grandchildren and three great grandchildren, two brothers, Fred of Maynard, Minn. and Will of Ames, besides a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

He was a member of Memorial Lutheran church, the Knights of Pythias lodge and the Sons of Union Veterans and a charter member of Nevada Community club. He was active in early days of the Rural Mail Carriers delivery service, as a carried and served as National secretary of that group. He was also very active over a long period of years in the Fife and Drum Corps of the Civil War musicians and served as their secretary for many years.

He gained a wide circle of friends and acquaintances through being court bailiff of Story county district court for over thirty years and was an honorary member of the Story Bar Association.

Out of Town

Among those from out of town in attendance at the funeral service were Fred Child and Mr. and Mrs. Fay Child of Maynard, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Child, Frank Child and Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Shirley, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Shaddock of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Tesdall of Boone, Mrs. Vera Morgan, Ames, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Child of Wichita Falls, Texas.

Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Teter of Sioux City and Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Eimers of So. Sioux City, Will Tanner and Chet Pearson of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Don McCord and Mrs. Will Child of Ames, Mrs. Ida Swartley and two nieces of Peoria, Ill., Mrs. May Morfoot and daughter, Mrs. George Whitson of Greene. Previous to the funeral the body of Mr. Child rested at the Dixon Funeral Home which had the details in charge.
