OBITUARY OF CHARLES CARMODY
Charles Carmody, one of the most respected citizens of Zearing, passed away about five o'clock, Thursday morning, June 9, at his home in Zearing, after an illness of about six months.
Mr. Carmody is survived by his wife and three children, and seven grandchildren. The deceased was born in Sunberry, Penn., on April 1st, 1865, being at the time of his death 56 years, 2 months and 9 days.
In the year 1890, he was united in marriage to Margaret Maroney. To this union four children were born. One child, Delia Hanora, died in infancy. The surviving children are: John P., Patrick J., and Mary K., now Mrs. Joseph Roache [should be Roche], all living around Zearing. They with their families were constantly by his bedside helping their mother to care for and console their father during his long suffering and death. Mr. Carmody also had the consolation of seeing and visiting with all his brothers and sisters, Mary, Stephen, John and Michael, who were with him at the time of his death. Delia and Patrick could not be here but had seen and visited with him a short time before.
When Mr. Carmody was about one year of age, his parents moved to Forreston, Ill. where they resided till the year 1883, when they moved to Iowa and settled on a farm in Sherman township. Here the deceased grew to manhood and continued to live until his marriage, when he bought a farm about a mile from the old homestead. They lived there until 1915, when they moved to Zearing.
Like most boys in those years he received his education in the country schools where students were taught industry and perseverance. He also possessed those characteristics which make it possible for a man to meet and successfully overcome the trials that he and his faithful wife were forced to meet. At the time of their marriage he bought a farm on borrowed capita, his sister Delia loaning him the money so he could buy instead of rent. From the first his labor seemed crowned with success and before his last illness had the happiness of seeing his three children settled around him on farms that he had purchased for them, and having plenty left for himself and wife.
Mr. Carmody was a public spirited and patriotic citizen, ever ready to extend his assistance to any worthy cause. He was born of Catholic parentage and the teachings of the Holy Mother Church were installed in his mind in youth and ever remained there. His work was never so rushed, the weather or roads never too bad for him to attend mass or any other service that was conducted in the church and he was ever ready to support it. He was one of the small congregation that built St. Gabriel's church in Zearing, and it was from this church that his funeral services were conducted by his spiritual advisor, Father Frein, whose words of advice and consolation were a great comfort to the bereft family. He was a Knight of Columbus, having ben initiated in the Marshalltown Council. He was also a member of the Woodman lodge in Zearing.
Some time before his death he called his family around him and tole them what he would like to have them do when he had passed away. He also told them who he wanted as pall bearers. He knew from the first that his illness would prove fatal, but he also knew that his Heavenly Father gave him this trial for a goo purpose, so he bore it patiently knowing that in the end he would receive his eternal reward.
Those left to mourn him are his wife, Margaret, three children, John, Patrick and Mary, with their wives and husband, his seven little grandchildren, four brothers, Patrick of Canada, Stephen of Zearing, John and Michael of Perry, two sisters, Mrs. Geo. M. Walker of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. John Maroney of Nevada.
Interment was made in St. James cemetery*, Nevada. May his soul rest in peace.
