MRS. PHILLIP ALLEN DIES

A Long Time Resident of the County --A Most Worthy Woman

Mrs. Phillip Allen of this city passed over the river into the great beyond Tuesday evening, May 11, 1920, at the Iowa Sanitarium. Her health had been somewhat broken the past two years, but her physical ailments did not assume a serious form until quite recently. Some two weeks ago she was taken to the sanitarium for treatment and in the hope that she would be relieved of her sufferings. A careful expert diagnosis of her case, however revealed the fact that her malady was incurable and the end of her earthly life's journey was near at hand, and came to a close as stated. Her age was 65 years and two days.

Mrs. Allen was born May 9, 1855, on a farm near Delevan, Ill., her parents being Caleb and Sarah Rulon. Her maiden name was Mary Jane Rulon, and the blood of the sturdy, thrifty and unconquerable Huguenots of France coursed through her veins and contributed in come good measure, no doubt, to the substantial, worthy type of her character and life. Her marriage to Phillip Allen occurred November 12, 1874, at Delevan, Ill. For a time following their marriage they lived on a farm near Delevan. Later they moved to Ashkum, Iroquois county, Ill. In 1896, they came to Story county and located in Milford township, which has remained the family homestead until the present time, and is now occupied by their son, Frank Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Allen moved from the farm to Nevada in 1914, and here made their home until the death of Mr. Allen, May 10, 1918. The home here was continued by Mrs. Allen until her death, two years and a day later.

The children of the family were five: Frank, Nevada; Sadie (Mrs. Sowers, Nevada; Geo. E., Onawa; Mary (Mrs. Chitty), Toledo; and Ivy (Mrs. Hopper), who died August 3rd, 1910. The surviving grandchildren are fifteen. The two children of Mrs. Hopper were reared in the home of their grandparents from the time of their birth which occurred at the time of the mother's death, until the present, and as wisely and as tenderly as could have been done by their own parents.

The Allen family, during their more than two score years' residence here have been good all-round citizens. They believed in education and so far as they could utilized the advantages of our excellent school, George E. being a graduate. They were good community people and took pleasure in encouraging church, lecture courses, library activities and all other movements and institutions that make for betterment of social environments. The living presence or their like is a large gain to any community and their passing a great loss.

The funeral services are being conducted at the Allen home on Pine street with Dr. Innes, of Ames, in charge, assisted by Rev. Walz, pastor. The hour, 2:30.
