Military Servies Held In Zearing For Automobile Victim Harry Britten

Military Services were held Friday from the E.U.B. Church in Zearing for Harry Britten who was killed in a car accident May 10.

The Rev. Louis Klotzbach officiated.

Casket bearers were W. H. Brown Sr., Maurice Butler, J. A. Lund, Donald Grimm, Guy Clatterbuck and Earl Menzel.

Mrs. Walter Lund accompanied the quartet of Glen McBride, Paul Lundy, Eldon Crain, and Dale Johnston.

Mrs. Ambrose Johnston and Mrs. Glen McBride cared for the flowers.

Legion Post No. 113 of Zearing held Military services at the grave. Burial was in the Zearing.

Obituary

Harry William Britten was born on a farm near Zearing, Sept. 1895, son of William and Eliza Willey Britten. He died May 10, 1961 at the age of 65 years, 7 months and 28 days.

Britten was raised in Zearing and in 1917 enlisted in the United States Army Air Force. He took his training in San Antonio, Texas and went with the Expeditionary forces to England and France. He was discharged in the rank of Sargeant in 1919.

Soon afterward he began operating the family farm. He was united in marriage with Gertrude Alice Lehman, and to this union was born two sons, William H. Britten and Harold M. Britten.

He was active for many years in community and Civic activities, serving on the school board for six years, and active as chairman for two years. For several years he was a director and Secretary of the former telephone co. in Zearing. He was a member of the town council and an active member of the American Legion Post 116 of Zearing. Following his retirement from farming he was Deputy assessor in Story county.

In Feb. 1960 he announced his candidacy on the Republican side for County Supervisor, and was elected to that office to begin a three year term in 1962.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Arthur.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; his sons, William of Worcester, Mass., and Harold on the family farm near Zearing; a brother Maurice of Nevada; three grandsons, Jerry, Alan and Kent and a granddaughter Sharron Britten of Zearing.
