Switzer Funeral Friday Afternoon
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2:00, at the Bishop Funeral Home, for Samuel H. Switzer, who died Tuesday, February 16, at his home 1622 North Third street and interment was in the Nevada cemetery.
The service was in charge of Rev. C. E. Lookingbill assisted by Rev. Geo. A. Lawton. The same scripture lesson was read and the same songs used as at the funerals of his parents.
The singing was by a mixed quartette consisting of W. C. Foreman, R. A. Davis, Mrs. J. C. Hathaway and Mrs. Harry Lough.
Pallbearers were from among the barbers of the city: W. C. Hoel, N. D. Burnett, G. D. Lacey, Jimmy Stone, Jas. Williams and Ray H. Menzel. Mr. Bishop who had charge of the funeral had also known the deceased as a barber in earlier days.
Samuel H. Switzer was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania April 2, 1852 and died at his home 1622 North Third street, Nevada, on Feb. 16, 1932 aged 79 years, 10 months, 16 days.
He was the son of Wm. and Catherine Switzer and one of 11 children.
He continued to reside in Pennsylvania until the age of 3 years, when the family moved Dixon, Ill. At the age of 19 years he moved with his parents to Warren county 15 miles southwest of Indianola.
On Oct. 22, 1875 he was united in marriage to Margaret Bickel of Indianola. To this union four children were born.
He was converted at the age of 16 years and united with the Methodist Episcopal church. In 1871 he moved his family to Pleasantville, and there became a very active worker in all church services acting as Sunday School superintendent for a number of years and director of the choir and has always been a true follower of his Saviour.
He worked as a barber for over 40 years and was classed as an excellent one by all his fellowmen.
In 1906 he moved his family to Des Moines where he followed his profession and there, made a world of friends.
He was always a true loving husband and father and very kind to all, therefore has an untold number of friends.
His departure is deeply mourned by his wife and children, W. E. Switzer and family of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. McGiffert of Chicago; his oldest sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Glasscock of Chicago, six grandchildren and 4 great grand children also a number of nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
