FORMER ROLAND MAN SUICIDED

HERMAN JOHNSON, RAILWAY ENGINEER, TOOK OWN LIFE AT MARSHALLTOWN

Special to the Journal.
Marshalltown, Sept. 7--Herman Johnson, 41, M. & St. L. engineer, was found dead in his home here Friday, lying on an improvised bed before a gas stove with the three burners open.

The man was found by the call boy, who failed to get response to his knock when he went to summon the man to work.

The cause of the suicide is unknown. Funeral services will be -------- afternoon at 4:00.

The coroner decided that an inquest was not necessary. It was stated that death had taken place at least 24 hours before the body was found.

Neighbors had detected the odor of escaping gas and an investigation had been started by the gas company about the time the police arrived.

Johnson, who leaves a wife and two children, was born at Roland, September 19, 1894, a son of N. and Rebecca Johnson.

He had been in Marshalltown since 16 years of age and emplpyed by the M. & St. L. for 25 years.

He leaves besides his widow, two children, Laura, 13, and May, 7. Two brothers and three sisters are J. O. Johnson of Roland, Edward Johnson of Geneva Mont., Mrs. J. S. Thompson of McCallsburg, Mrs. L. M. Jackson of Hampton and Mrs. Cyrus Schwoon of Hollandale, Minn.
