SLATER.
Mrs. Thorson, a widow lady of Slater, died and was buried last Friday. Disease, consumption. Three small children are left alone in the world to contend the best way they can for their rights.
From Nevada Representative January 5, 1898 (page 5)
A Slater citizen calls attention to a typographical error in Slater items of December 22nd, in which the name of Thorson is printed Thomas; and to correct the wrong impression made further comments as follows:
"The children it is true have been bereaved of a loving mother, but that they are cast upon the world the contend for themselves is a mistake. Their age is respectively 7, 9 and 11. They have relatives in and around Slater that will see to it that they are not left without food or shelter. They are at home with their grandmother Arntz who has promised to raise them, where they have a nice home and plenty. If she by reason of death should be called away, they have a guardian to see that they are cared for and not thrown upon the world."
SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Mary Arntz married Gilbert Thorson 15 March 1885 in Story County, Iowa. The maternal grandmother, Malinda Elizabeth (Larson/Vaaro) Arntz, is listed in the 1900 Palestine Township, Story County, Iowa census with her three Thorson grandchildren listed as Almor (Elmer), Mable and Lindora.
