THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, July 1, 1971, page 1, column 4. "E. L. WOOD. - Retired Maxwell postmaster, Ernest L. Wood, 73, died Friday at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, where he had been a patient for the past month. A lifetime resident of Maxwell, Wood was born on Nov. 18, 1897 to Harvey A. and Alice Hall Wood. He married Gladys Hurst on Aug. 17, 1926. Surviving are his wife, Gladys and two sisters, Mrs. Lee (Mildred) Cook** and Mrs. Jim (Leona) Stone, both of Nevada. Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 27, at 2 p.m., at the Cooper Funeral Home, with Rev. DeLoss Marken and Rev. David Shaeffer in charge. Mrs. Charlotte Caple furnished the organ music. In charge of the flowers were Mrs. Leota Scott and Harriett Cooper. Casket bearers were Bill Stone, Avery Hurst, Linden Caple, Paul, Jimmy and Robert Stone. WOOD - Ernest Linden Wood was born Nov. 18, 1857, at the old Jesse Wood homestead north of Maxwell, later known as the Dykstra farm, the son of Harvey A. Wood and Alice Hall Wood, one of three children. His death came at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, on June 24, 1971, after an illness of several weeks, at the age of 73 years and 7 months. As a child he moved with his parents to Oklahoma, but only for a period of five years. They then returned to make their home in Maxwell for the remainder of their lives. He graduated from the Maxwell High School and from the 4-C's Business College in Des Moines. He was married to Gladys Hurst of Farrar, on Aug. 17th, 1926. He worked for several years at Peoples State Bank in Maxwell and then was appointed Postmaster in 1934 serving for 25 years until his retirement in 1959. Since that time he has owned and operated the Laundromat in Maxwell. He was a Charter Member of the Lions Club, served on the Town Council, was active in all civic affairs and church activities, being a longtime member of the Christian Church (Disciples). He willingly assumed the duties of a public servant when needed, performing faithfully and well. He was preceded in death by his parents and only brother, Sidney Wood. Surviving are his wife and sister, Leona Stone of Nevada, Iowa. Also seven nephews; four sons of his sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stone, Jimmy, Paul, Robert and Bill Stone, his brother's sons, Adrian, Glen and Harvey Wood. Also Avery of California and Allen Hurst. He leaves a host of devoted relatives and friends to mourn his passing. Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 27 at 2 p.m., in the Cooper Funeral Home, with Reverends DeLoss Marken and David Shaeffer in charge. The organ music was furnished by Mrs. Charlotte Caple. The floral arrangements were in charge of Mrs. Leota Scott and Mrs. Harriett Cooper. Casket bearers were Bill Stone, Avery Hurst, Linden Caple, Paul, Jimmy and Robert Stone. Interment was in the Maxwell Cemetery. Among those attending the services from a distance were Ben Mason of Davenport; Mrs. Stanley Nickerson and Russell Nickerson of Truman, Minn.; Larry Lockwood and Wendy and Paul Lockwood of Grundy Center; Mr. and Mrs. Fremont Hadley of Grand Junction; Mrs. Russell Hurst and Mr. and Mrs. Avery Hurst and family of LaCrosse, Wisc.; besides relatives and friends from surrounding towns."
