THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, April 7, 1949, page 1, column 1. "FORMER RESIDENT PASSES AWAY. - Le Roy Whitney, 73, of Denver, Colo. Passed away at six a.m. Wednesday morning, April 6. Mr. Whitney was a brother of Harding Witmer** and former resident of this community. Funeral services will be held in the Presbyterian church in Maxwell at 2:30 Saturday afternoon with Rev. G. H. Hulsebus in charge. Burial will be in the Maxwell cemetery. The complete obit will appear in next weeks issue." **Editorial note - Le Roy was the brother of Jennie Marilla Whitney Witmer, wife of Harding Witmer.
THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, April 14, 1949, page 1, column 4. "LeROY WHITNEY - Le Roy** Whitney, son of E. H. and Mary Whitney was born at Greencastle, Iowa on June 28, 1875 and passed away in the Denver General Hospital at ___ ___ on April 6, 1949 at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 8 days. On January 2_, 1897 he was united in marriage to Kate Stillwell at Maxwell, Iowa and to this union were born seven children. Mrs. Whitney passed away in 1946, also preceding their father in death were Floyd, Francis and Elizabeth. The Whitney's left Maxwell in 1918 and for a time lived in the Farrar and Mingo neighborhood and at Ames. Due to ill health he moved to Denver, Colorado in 1927, and spent the remaining part of his life there. Surviving are one son, Harry, of Denver, Colorado; and three daughters, Mrs. Marie Johnson, of Sharon, Wisconsin; Mrs. Leona Ball and Mrs. Hazel Jones of Ames; two brothers E. H. Whitney, of Altadena, California and Allen Whitney of Santa Ana, California and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Witmer of Maxwell, seven grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in the First Presbyterian Church in Maxwell on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. G. H. Hulsebus in charge. The many floral tributes were most beautiful. Mrs. Kathleen Minear sang two solo's, "Old Rugged Cross" and "City Foresquare,"** with Mrs. Betty Porter accompanist. Pallbearers were his nephews, Archie, Harlan and Frank Witmer, Roy Bell, Burt and Carl Whitney. Interment was in the Maxwell Cemetery." "CARD OF THANKS - To all the friends whose sympathy and services were so kindly tendered in our time of bereavement, we desire to extend our sincere thanks. Mr. and Mrs. Harland Johnson and family.
