THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, November 22, 1894, page 1. "OBITUARY - WHITMORE - On the 16th inst. Occurred the funeral of Mrs. Harrie Whitmore, aged 73 years, 5 month and 14 days. She was born in Meyersdale, Summerset** county, Pa., May 30, 1821. She leaves a large family, and a large circle of friends to mourn her departure. Her remains were laid to rest in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. The funeral was preached by Presiding Elder Yerger, assisted by Reves.** Snyder and Brown. She had fought a good fight, she had run a long race, and it is reasonable to believe there is a crown of reward awaiting her. "MOTHER'S VACANT CHAIR.** We gathered in our quiet home, While twilight deepened round; We heard the night wind's sobbing tone. A mournful, wailing sound; Our hearts were by affliction tried, Our lives seemed full of care, A saddened band we gathered round Our mother's vacant chair. We gazed upon the favored nook, Within the fire-light's glow, The dear old spot where mother sat In days we loved to know. Bright visions of the past it brought, Of joys unmixed with care. Glad thoughts of childhood's happy days, With home and mother there. How grandly through the years she tried Life's mission to fulfill; The wearied hands now folded He, The loving voice is still. No more in all the fleeting years Shall we behold her there, But safe enthroned within our hearts Is mother's vacant chair. The years will pass with ceaseless tread. Life's sorrows come and go; But still we never can forget The love she did bestow. The place no other form can fill within the fire-light's glare. Earth holds no treasure half so dear As mother's vacant chair." "CARD OF THANKS. - We desire to tender thanks to the many friends who have rendered such kindly assistance and sympathy during the sickness and death of our beloved mother, Mrs. Whitmore. THE DAUGHTERS." **Editorial note - spelling, punctuation and grammar are from the original newspaper article. No credit was given for the author of MOTHER'S VACANT CHAIR.
