Funeral Services for Mrs. John Van Gundy at Slater Sunday
Slater, Oct. 16--Mrs. J. W. Van Gundy, 71, died Friday morning after a short illness, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. L. Moore, near Sheldahl. Mr. and Mrs. Van Gundy returned from Florida about two months ago and had been staying with their daughter.
Funeral services for Mrs. Van Gundy were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Will Van Gundy home at 2:00 o'clock at the Bethlehem church. The services were in charge of Rev. Dickey of the Free Methodist church of Polk City, assisted by Rev. J. O. Smith of Des Moines and Rev. E. R. Rorem of the Bethlehem church.
The many beautiful floral offerings were in charge of Mrs. A. A. Chader and Mrs. Fred Carroll.. The pall bearers were Albert Tjaden of Ames, John Nielson, Martin Helland, A. A. Chader, Chas. Skortman and Arne Christopher.
Three songs, "Jesus Lover of My Soul," "I'm But a Stranger Here" and "Nearer My God to Thee" were sung by the audience. Burial was made in the Slater cemetery.
Mercy Mason was born April 10, 1863 in Lincoln township south of Sheldahl and died October 12, 1934 at the age of 71 years, 6 months and 2 days.
Her parents were Hactor and Anna Mason who preceded her in death. She became a Christian early in her girlhood and always lived a devout life. In October 1879 at the age of 16 she was united in marriage to John W. Van Gundy of Farmer, Iowa. Eight children were born to this union. They made their home in Slater the greater part of their life.
Those left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother are Her husband and five children, as follows: Mrs. E. L. Moore of near Sheldahl, Mrs. Clyde Inman, and Mrs. E. J. Harris of West Palm Beach, Florida, Lincoln Van Gundy of Centuria, Wis., and Will Van Gundy of Slater, also 19 grand children and 17 great grand children. One sister, Mrs. Carrie Nelson of Belmond and one brother Knute Mason of Fargo, N. D. Three half sisters, Mrs. Pete Brown of Bemidji, Minn., Mrs. Sam Barnes of Alleman and Mrs. Fred Nelson of Des Moines, also one half brother Thor Mason of Alleman, and a large number of relatives and friends.
