He enlisted in the Civil War from Lyons, Wayne county, New York, on August 11th, 1862, and was mustered into the U. S. service at Auburn, New York, September 1st, of the same year, as Private of Co. D, 111th Regiment, New York Infantry Volunteers. He was engaged in several battles being wounded in an engagement at South Side R. R. near Petersburg, on April 2d, 1865. He also engaged in the Battle of Gettysburg. He was honorably discharged from Stanton Gen. Hospital, Washington, d. C., at close of the war. He was married to Adah I. Miller, March 1st, 1877, at Truxton, New York. The moved to McHenry county, Illinois, in 1882, and from there to Belmond in the spring of 1889, where they have since resided. To this union were born four children, the oldest a son, dying in infancy. Those living are Ralph, Orah and Ivah, all of whom were present at the funeral services. Besides his wife and children, he leaves seven grandchildren and friends without number. He also left two brothers and one sister, Mrs. Weigand, who has since died at her home in Texas. He was a true and loving husband and father, always having the welfare of his loved ones at heart. As many can testify, he was a kind and obliging neighbor and friend, striving ever to observe the Golden rule in all his dealings with his fellow men. "A loved one from us is gone, A voice we loved is stilled, A place is vacant in our home Which never can be filled." CARD OF THANKS - We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the many friends and neighbors who so kindly assisted us in our bereavement and also our appreciation of the beautiful flowers. Mrs. R. W. Tomlinson and Children.
