She was born in South Carolina and moved with her parents to the vicinity of Rhodes, Ia., as a small child. Here she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to David E. Garis, July 3, 1877. This union was blessed with two daughters who survive their mother. They are Mrs. Fred Flickinger and Mrs. Guy Cooper, both of them residing in Maxwell. She is also survived by her husband, one grandchild Fred Flickinger Jr. of Iowa City, one brother John Hughes of Webster City and one sister Martha Hughes of Lamoni. Besides these there are other relatives and many friends.
Mrs. Garis spent almost all of her life in this state. She grew to maturity in the vicinity of Rhodes and she and her husband resided many years. They moved with their family to Maxwell in 1897 at which place they spent the remainder of their married life. She was best known to her own family and a group of intimate friends. She was interested chiefly in making her home one of comfort and enjoyment, in seeking the well being of her children, and in revealing her loyalty and love to her husband.
The spirit of Mrs. Garis may be stated in part by one of the poems she cherished much. It is a prayer for courage by Grace Noll Crowell.
"God Make me brave for Life
O! braver that this!
Let me straighten after pain
As a tree straightens after the rain
Shining and lovely
God make me brave for Life
Much braver that this!
As the blown grass lifts, let me rise
From sorrow with quiet eyes
Knowing thy way is wise
God make me brave--Life brings
Such blinding things
Help me to keep my sight
Help me to see aright,
That out of dark--comes light."Those attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Cloe and Elinor of Cooper; Mrs. Chas. Gamble and Elizabeth, Mrs. C. G. Ebert, Mrs. Frank Boardman, Miss Kate Maloney, Mrs. Velda Ringheim, Mrs. Fred Hampton of Nevada; Mrs. Sadie Sowers, Mr. and Mrs. Linn Flickinger of Ames; Mr. and Mrs. John Garis, Rollin Richardson of Rhodes, and John Hughes and Floyd Richardson of Webster City.
