THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, March 21, 1940, page 1, column 2. "JAMES THOMAS SWARM - 1869-1940. - James Thomas Swarm, only son of the union of aDniel** and Jane Swarm, was born on October 25, 1869, at Peoria City, Polk County, Iowa where he grew to young manhood. He departed this life on March 17, 1940 at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 17 days at the home of his son Virgil, near Nevada, Iowa. At the age of 19 years he was united in marriage to Mrs. Lida Kulow of Peoria. For several years they farmed in the Peoria neighborhood, later moving to Des Moines, Iowa, where they established their home, reared their family, and kept up the home as long as health would permit up to a few years ago. He was a cheerful and willing worker not giving up in the field of labor until illness forced him to do so. He took pride in labor well and faithfully done. Ten children were born to bless their home. Those preceding him in death were: Victor, in young man hood, Iowa, at the age of 7, Kenneth at 16 and Hope, just entering young womanhood. Those still living are Marjorie, Mrs. Elwin Smith, of Nyassa, Oregon; Pauline, Mrs. A. W. Schmidt, of Des Moines; Maurice, of Des Moines; Virgil, of Nevada; Stanley, of Clarion, Iowa; Jack, of Dallas Center, Iowa. Other survivors are his wife, 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, one half-brother, Jacob Swarm, of Indianapolis, Indiana, various nieces and nephews. He was stricken with his illness five years ago. All that medical science could do was done. All through the long months of pain and suffering he was so patient and grateful to those who tried to make his pain less hard to stand. On October 31, 1939, he was converted and accepted Christian baptism, according to the rites of the Methodist Church. His faith in Christ remained firm to the last. Funeral services were held from the Maxwell Methodist Church at 2:00 p. m. on Tuesday, March 19, 1940, with the pastor, Judson T. Perkins, in charge. Burial was made in the Peoria cemetery. Mrs. Ray Gooden and Jimmie Beal sand "IN the Garden," "No Disappointment In Heaven" and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," accompanied by Mrs. Arthur Hale at the piano. The pallbearers were Emmett Scott, Vern Randol, G. F. Carpenter, Van Busenburg, Brink Shipler and Albert Hill." **Editorial note - spelling used is from the original newspaper article.
