THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, April 25, 1907, page 1. "WAFTED HOMEWARD - "If we knew the baby fingers Pressed against the window pane, would be cold and stiff tomorrow, Never trouble us again, Would the bright eyes of our darling Catch the frown upon our brow, Would the prints of baby fingers Vex us then as they do now?" Effie Slaughter was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, December 10, 1899, and died at the house of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Slaughter, in Maxwell, Saturday, April 20, 1907, aged seven years, four months and ten days. The little sufferer was sick for twenty days with a complication of typhoid fever and brain trouble and succumbed after a hopeless struggle and was wafted homeward by the white winged angel of death. The funeral occurred at the Christian church on Monday conducted by Rev. Wade, of Drake University, after which the remains were buried in the Peoria Cemetery. Her father was called home from Casper, Wyo. To attend at her bedside, and all that loving hands could do was performed for the little patient, but were unavailing. Her grandfather was also by her side. A touching scene of the funeral was the little playmates of Effie attending in a body, her Sunday School class being attended by her teacher, Mrs. A. C. Enfield, each bringing a flower and Miss King brought the primary class from the Maxwell schools, each pupil depositing a beautiful flower on the casket. The little chair, now vacant, was placed by the tiny casket, draped in mourning for the departed occupant. God's will be done. CARD OF THANKS - We take this method of extending our heartfelt thanks to the kind neighbors and friends who assisted us so tirelessly in our recent bereavement in the loss of our darling. God will surely bless you as he commands us to do these things. - Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Slaughter. Mr. Chas. Tomlinson, Mrs. Hattie George."
