THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, November 9, 1905, page 4, column 3. "DEATH OF JOSEPH SHAW - J. S., one of the pioneers of Polk county, died at his home southeast of town Monday morning. Mr. Shaw was an honest hard working man, and as a result accumulated a large amount of land and other property. Although he brought to himself wealth, yet he never forgot to minister to the wants of others. He was highly respected by all who knew him, and was a good neighbor and excellent citizen. He was perhaps as widely known as any man in his section of the country. In all his dealings with his fellow men he was perfectly trustworthy and was a most genial gentleman in conversation. He at one time practiced veterinary surgery with a marked degree of success. He will be greatly missed from the community. The funeral was held on Wednesday at the Catholic church in Washington township, Polk county, of which he was a member."
