THE MAXWELLL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday July 30, 1903, page 1. "Obituary. - Mary Catharine McCord was born in Wapello county, Iowa, April we, 1853. She was one of a family of nine children and was the first of the children to be called to the eternal home. Her father was C. P. McCord and her mother Sarah E. McCord. Her father died in Oct., 1886. Her mother still survives her and was with her in her last sickness, which was a great comfort to both the mother and the departed one. She has five brothers, viz., J. W. and A. S. McCord, who live northwest of Collins, S. G. McCord, of Collins, Dr. E. S. McCord, of Ames, and C. P. McCord, of Nevada. Her sisters are Mrs. N. E. White, of Collins, Mrs. Edith Funk, of Perry, and Miss Alice McCord, of Nevada. She was married to John Ray February 15, 1872, at her home near Iowa Center. To them were born six children, Wm. J. and Fred O. living northeast of Maxwell, Mrs. Rosa M. Gamble living west of Maxwell, Dwight L., Blanche A. and Mabel L. who are left to take up the responsibilities in the home which mother has laid down. Story county has been her home since she was one year old. She moved with her husband to their farm northeast of Maxwell the second year of married life which has been their home ever since until last December when they moved to Maxwell. She has been an invalid for twenty-eight years. She was a patient sufferer through all these years. About six weeks ago she was taken worse and confined to her bed most of the time, and on Saturday morning, July 18th, she became alarmingly worse and through-out the week her disease made steady progress and on Saturday morning, July 25th, she yielded to death's call and fell asleep, age fifty years, three months and one day. A daughter kind, a sister beloved, a mother faithful and true, a wife of comfort and pleasure and a friend cherished by many has entered her reward. Because of poor health she was not permitted to have church privileges but lived a consistant** christian life and always pointed out the better way to her children. The funeral was held at Iowa Center Monday at 11:00 a. m., being in charge of Rev. Clay Bobbitt pastor of the C. P. church of this city and interment was made in Woodland cemetery. The bereaved family have the sympathy of hosts of friends in this their time of great trial." **Editorial note, use of spelling and language is as found in the original newspaper article.
