Lee Bates Dies Here on Sunday At the Age of 59

Lee Bates, 1108 1/2 Sixth St., Nevada, died Sunday evening at 6:35 at the Story County Hospital where he had been a patient the past six weeks.

Bates, 59, had been ill with cancer for some time.

He was born March 16, 1907 in Covington, Ind., the son of James W. and Cordelia Bates. He lived almost his entire life in Story County, however, where he was a farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Dortha; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James W. Bates of Nevada, one son, James Lee Bates of Rantoul, Ill.; one daughter, Cordelia Bates of Marshalltown, four grandchildren, and three brothers, Paul of Ames, John of Nevada and Gordon of Colo.

He was preceded in death by a sister in 1941.

Funeral services will be held from the Ryan Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 with the Rev. Byron D. Surface officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Cemetery.
