THOMAS OXLEY - After many months of pain and suffering during which time loving relatives and friends did all in their power to bring relief, Thomas Oxley passed away at his home in this place at 12:45 o'clock Sunday afternoon, October 23rd, aged seventy-seven years, eight months and four days. He nearly a year he been in poor health and several times it was thought that the end was near, but he rallied and there seemed to be hopes for his recovery. A few days before his death he had a severe sinking spell and gradually grew weaker until the end came. For many years he was a resident of this vicinity, and by his exemplary life, and habits made for himself a wide circle of friends - who will be grieved to learn of his taking away. Thomas Oxley was born in Carlton, Yorkshire, England, February 19, 1833. He emigrated to the United States, landing at Philadelphia, April 5, 1854. For two years he worked on a farm in Maryland, after which he went to Illinois, arriving there in the spring of 1856. Here he worked on the farm until August 1, 1861, when he enlisted in the army, serving for three years and twenty days during the Civil war. He came to Iowa in 1865 and settled on a farm near Peoria City where he lived until 1893 when he moved to Maxwell, where he resided during the remainder of his life. Ox September 4, 1864, he was united in marriage to Mary C. Lacy and to this union seven children were born, five girls and two boys, namely Mrs. Lizzie Swarms, John W., Mrs. Minnie Pring, Mrs. Ida Kulow, Mrs. Jennie Byers, James T., and Mrs. Alice Sperlin, all of whom, with their mother are left to mourn his departure. Besides these the deceased is survived by brother, thirty-nine grand children, three great grandchildren, besides numerous other relatives and friends. In 1871 he was converted and united with the Methodist Protestant church at Peoria City, living ever after a faithful, consistent Christian life. The funeral was held from the M. E. church in this place at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H. G. Hicks, pastor, who was assisted in the service by Rev. Nutt, of the Peoria M. P. church. The body was laid to rest in the Peoria cemetery."

"Several from out of town were in attendance at the funeral of Thomas Oxley, last Wednesday afternoon, among whom were 5 nephews of the deceased, sons of James Oxley of Jacksonville, Illinois. Others were John Lacey, of Marshalltown and Richard Lacey, of Gray, brother and nephew of Mrs. Oxley."
