MRS. MARTHA BROWN

MAXWELL--Mrs. Martha Jane Brown, the daughter of James Coleman and Barbara Ellen Stogsdell, was born in Leavenworth County, Kansas, May 30, 1859. She died at the home of Mrs. Edna Hennick in Maxwell, Iowa Thursday, September 18, 1958, at the age of 99 years, 3 months and 19 days.

Mrs. Brown moved from Leavenworth County, Kansas to the vicinity of Elkhart, Iowa at the age of seven. She spent the remainder of her life in Iowa.

She was married to Louis Henry Bell of Berwick, Iowa, September 2, 1874. To this union was born five children. Four children have preceded her in death; a son who died in infancy, a daughter, Mrs. Lottie Hostetler, two sons, Walter E. and Vernon Bell. Two granddaughters, Gladys Alder an Dorothy Ruth Bell, a grandson, Stephen Earl Bell all of Maxwell, Iowa, also preceded her in death. Her husband, Louis Henry Bell died in 1904.

She was baptized in the Maxwell Christian church in November 1902 and remained an active member until her health failed.

In May 1907, she was united in marriage to Frank Brown of Iowa Center. He died in 1932.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Alma Alder of Marinette, Wisconsin and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Smith, age 96, of Dallas, Oregon and Mrs. Francis McNutt, age 79, of Salem, Oregon. Six grand-children also survive Harry and Johnny Hostetler of Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Sylvia Bergeson of Pechtigo, Wisconsin, Mr. Ruth Johnston of Marinette, Wisconsin and Edwin B. and Allyn Bell of Maxwell, Iowa; eleven great grandchildren, seven great, great grandchildren and many friends.
