JOHN, EDWIN E. (1872-1894)

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, February 1, 1894, page 4, column 3. "Obituary. - JOHN: Edwin E. was born near Iowa Center, Story county, Iowa, Sept. 26, 1872 and died at the home of his parents in Perry, Iowa, Jan. 27, 1894, after an illness of sixteen weeks. The remains were brought to Maxwell in charge of a delegation of the Train-Men's Brotherhood, and the funeral services took place in the C. P. church on Monday, 29th, at 11 a.m. The house was entirely filled with sympathizing friends. The music was by the united choirs of the M. E. and C. P. churches; Rev. Curtis read the scripture lesson and offered prayer. Rev. Ferguson then made a short address, after which Rev. Doty offered prayer. The remains were then looked upon by the large concourse present, after which they were laid to rest in our cemetery. Edwin was a generous, noble-hearted young man, warmly attached to his parents, sisters and brothers, and did his utmost to promote their comfort. His father, Sam'l John, was very sick at the time of Edwin's death, and not able to come to the funeral. This also detained the mother at home. Two of the sisters were also sick and not able to come, but neither one so bad as the father. Two sisters and one brother were all that could come; but the large connection in this community, and the people in general, were present to show their respect for the dead, and their sympathy for the living. Edwin was only four months past 21 years, and always been stout and rugged until the last sickness came upon him. It was fever at first, but finally terminated in lung trouble. He was in the employ of the C. M. & St. P. Ry., as brakeman, and belonged to the Conductor and Brakeman's Brotherhood. This order took good care of him during his sickness and sent a delegation of eight men and four ladies in charge of the remains, all of whom seemed to be very nice people."

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, February 15, 1894, page 1. “RESTING AT LAST – Brother Edwin E. John, died Saturday Jan. 27th, 1894, at his home in Perry. After prayer at the home Sunday evening, his remains were taken to Maxwell on No. 4, for burial, accompanied by two sisters, one brother, six of the Brotherhood boys, and three of the Auxillary ladies. On Monday he was laid to rest in the Maxwell cemetery. The family have our heart felt sympathy.

“After eighteen weeks of sickness and suffering,
Poor boy, withpatience he bore,
Until last Saturday morn
The Angels o’er shadowed and bid him
Welcome to yon bright shore.

The home that he left seems so lonely,

And the heart’s that’s bereft seems so sad;
But he is dwelling now with loved ones,
Where the sad hearts are ever made glad.

His place in the lodge room is vacant,

He will meet with them no more.
But in Heaven the Brotherhood will be united
When they clasp hands on yon happy shore.”

Yours in Sisterly love.’
