THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, April 28, 1898, page _, column 3. "Mrs. Thos. Oxley, Sr., was called to Pella last Thursday, by a telegram announcing the death of her sister's husband, Dr. D. L. Jackson. The following account of the accident which caused his death is taken from the Pella ADVERTISER: "Dr. D. L. Jackson, A. S., was called to Durham Wednesday afternoon, April 20, on professional business and left here about 3 o'clock. He arrived at H. Van Oostrum's just a short distance from Durham, and there awaited the coming of another party who was to assist him, but thinking he had been delayed started on to his place of destination whereupon nearing the railroad crossing near Mr. Van Oostrum's place the limited express of the C. B. & Q road which was about an hour and a half late, whistled for the bridge, a short distance from the crossing, and the Dr. endeavored to cross before the train had arrived, and would have done so had his horse not slackened up just as he was going off the track. The Dr. Whipped the animal up but unfortunately it was not quick enough and the train struck the rear end of the buggy dragging it along for some distance, throwing him about thirty feet, landing him on his head which struck a tie and was badly crushed on the left side. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and carried to a house and medical aid was summoned immediately. Dr. Allen from this place, went over immediately but it was too late to give relief as the unfortunate one was rapidly passing away. He never regained consciousness even for a moment. The remains were brought to the home in this city Thursday. In his sudden death he leaves a wife and family of children to mourn their loss. He had been a resident of Pella for a number of years and was engaged in the veterinary business. It seemed as though it was one of those accidents destined to be. The funeral services were conducted form the home this morning, after which the remains were laid to rest in the city cemetery. The family have the heartfelt sympathy in this their sad hour of bereavement."
