THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, March 3, 1921, page 1, column 1. “Chas. Hurst, 13 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hurst, of near Farrar, is very ill of scarlet fever and there are grave doubts as to his recovery.”

THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, March 10, 1921, page 1, column 5. "Charles Gifford Hurst. - Charles Gifford Hurst, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hurst, was born December 18, 1906 and died March 3, 1921, aged 14 years, 2 months and 13 days. He leaves to mourn him, his father, mother, a sister and a brother; besides a grandfather and grandmother and a large number of sorrowing relatives. Chas. was an unusually bright, manly boy and a great favorite in the community in which he lived all his life, with the exception of 2 years that his parents resided in Jasper county. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He will be missed in Sunday School, among his classmates in school and above all in his home. Just why he should be taken now, as life was opening before him with such splendid promise is beyond our human comprehension. "We cannot say, we will not say that he is dead. He is just away." And we are left wondering here, how very fair that land must be since he is there. God help us to live that we may meet this dear boy where pain, sorrow or death never comes. The funeral service was held at the home west of Farrar, Friday, March 4th at 2 p.m. Rev. J. C. McCain, pastor of the Farrar church, in charge. The burial was in the Farrar cemetery hard by the church, which Charles loved. A whole community is in mourning because of the death of this beloved boy." "CARD OF THANKS - To all our neighbors who so kindly and faithfully assisted us during the sickness and death of our son and brother, we desire to extend our heart felt thanks and loving appreciation."
