THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, April 28, 1898, page _, column 3. "OBITUARY - Mr. Arlando Wesley Hay unexpectedly passed away about 7:30 o'clock Monday, April 11th. The previous evening he attended and enjoyed the Easter services in Antioch church and seemed to be exceedingly well. At 1:30 Monday morning the family was aroused by a sudden groan. They found him in a serious condition, with cold sweat dropping from him. Medical aid was immediately summoned and every effort made to relieve his suffering, but to no avail. He lingered until 7:30 the following morning, when his spirit departed from this terrestrial home. Mr. Hay was born in Vigo Co., Ind., May 12, 1847, and died April 11, 1898, at the age of 50 years, 10 months, 29 days. At the age of two and a half years, he moved with his parents to Iowa, locating near Anamosa, where the remainder of his life was spent. He was married to Miss Dillie S. Dunlap, Nov. 19, 1871, and to them were born seven children, all of whom survive him save Lulu, who died in infancy. Besides his wife, Rosa V., wife of G. W. Johnson, Henry W., Orrin W., Pearly C., Lawrence A. and Melbourne C. survive to mourn his death. In 1861 he was converted and joined the Christian church, and for a number of years was an active member. At the late revival at Antioch he renewed his faith in Christ. All through his life he was a man of great industry, and up to the time of his departure he continued attentive to his duties. Mr. Hay was a generous, upright citizen, a kind husband and father, and all ho have know him during these years have only admiration and esteem for his kindly qualities and his generous worth as a man. His death is a shock to the community where he made his home for so many years, and it may truly be said that Jones county has lost one of its best citizens. The sympathy of many friends will be with the afflicted wife and children in the loss of their loved one. The funeral sermon on the occasion was preached at Antioch church by Rev. Hooker of the United Brethren church, assisted by Rev. Potter. Those present from abroad were James Hall, of Maxwell, brother-in-law of deceased, and Mr. and Mrs. Grant Byerly, of Marion, cousins. Anamosa Eureka."
