THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, October 24, 1901, page 1. "A SAD COMMUNICATION - "Des Moines, Iowa, October 18, 1901. Dr. E. C. Scott, Maxwell, Iowa. Dear Friend: We are just in receipt of a telegram conveying the sad intelligence of the death, at two o'clock this morning, of Mr. Davis Hankins, at his home in Everett, Washington. Respectfully, W. A. Applegate." To the many friends of Mr. Hankins and family, in this vicinity, the sorrowful news comes as a shock. Altho' his demise was expected some time ago, from later reports of his convalescence the friends here had come to think of him as nearly recovered from the serious illness. Last spring he was taken down with typhoid fever, as were also other members of the family. His condition was such that he was taken to one of the best hospitals by the Odd Fellow's lodge of that city, and the lodge at this place, of which he was a member in good standing, was notified. Word was immediately sent back from this lodge to give the brother the best of medical attendance and nursing and charge expense accounts to his lodge at Maxwell, Iowa. This was done, and though Mr. Hankins underwent a most serious illness lasting from April until September, it seemed that he would recover, as from last reports he was able to be out of doors again. The death is a very sad one indeed, as the family is left without husband and father in a far away state and among comparative strangers. They removed from the farm north of Maxwell to that state one year ago last spring, and because of the illness with which they have been afflicted since their residence there had not become permanently established in business, and their opportunities for extending their acquaintance were curtailed. The sincere sympathy of a multitude of friends in this county, in which they lived the greater part of life, goes out to the grief sticken family in this sore bereavement. We are pleased to announce that, at the time of his death, Mr. Hankins was a member in good standing, of the Maxwell Homestead American Brotherhood of Yeomen, in which he carried a $2,000 life insurance policy." **Editorial note, spelling of words is like that in the newspaper article.
