Services Held For Ellen Siverina Sjurson
Funeral services held Friday afternoon November 4 from the farm home at 1:30 and 2:00 from the Bergen Lutheran Church for Mrs. Ellen Siverina Sjurson with Rev. A. E. Nelson officiating. The ladies sextet sang "Abide With Me" and "Peace I Leave With You." Otto Hanson sang "Come Ye Disonsolate." Pallbearers were nephews Amos Cole, Harvey Hoveland, Carl Sparboe, Martin Teig, Harris Hall, and Elmer Osmundson. Interment was made on the family lot in Roland Cemetery.
Those from a distance who attended Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Egeland, Estherville, Mr. Chris Egeland, Mr. and Mrs. W. R. DeWall and Mrs. Albert Mitchell from Grinnell, Mrs. Gertrude Patterson and Bob Klove of Iowa Falls, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Sjurson, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Nelson, Mrs. Arlor Strum, Mrs. Steve Kesteson of Des Moines and Mrs. Ralph Gilman of Des Moines besides many from Ames, Story City.
Obituary
Mrs. Ellen Siverina Sjurson nee Enge was born Sunday the 6th day of July 1873 in Etne, Norway. Her parents were Ben and Asher Enge. She was baptized the 13th day of July 1873 in the Stole Kjerke, Etne, Norway.
She immigrated to the United States with her parents, brothers and sisters in 1881, and came direct to Roland, in June just before she reached her 8th birthday.
She attended Sunday School and received her Christian instruction in the Bergen Lutheran Church and was confirmed by the late Rev. Jacobson. She attended the Roland School which was then a mile out of town.
On July 30, 1898 she was united in marriage to Severt Sjurson and with him established a farm on the homestead north of Roland. Here she lived a happy and successful life and in 1948 they celebrated their golden wedding. Here she lived till her death October 31, 1955, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 25 days.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband and three children, John of Ames, Agnes at home and Clarence of La Mesa, California; two grandsons, Sanford Sjurson and Paul Sjurson of Des Moines; one granddaughter Ellen Ann Sjurson of La Mesa, California, and one great granddaughter Susan Elaine Sjurson of Des Moines besides a host of relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, two sisters and two sons, Ben who died in infancy and George at the age of 19.
She loved the church and every branch of the church work and supported every missionary enterprise to the church. She was a faithful member of the Bethany Ladies Aid for 57 years and loved to attend even until the last. She loved her neighbors and friends ans was so happy when they came. In her church she found those things of eternal value in this fleeting life.
