Held Funeral Rites for Late Geo. Smith
Special to the Journal.
Maxell, Jan. 8--Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30, for the late George Smith in the Evangelical Church at Iowa Center with the Rev. C. R. Fitz of the Maxwell Methodist church officiating. A quartette, composed of Mrs. Van Busenburg, Mrs. Irvine Nowning, Harry Fackler and James Beal sang "We'll Never Say Goodbye in Heaven," "Going Down the Valle," and "Rock of Ages," with Mrs. George Dunlap at the piano.Pall bearers were four grandsons, Lowell and Ralph Andrews and Donald and Alfred Fry. Interment was in the Iowa Center Cemetery. The following life sketch of the deceased was read by the minister:
"George Smith was born to John and Sarah Smith at Iowa Center, March 20, 1856. His boyhood, his youth in fact his entire life was spent in the same community. On October 11, 1879, he was married to Clara Minnie Dolph. To this union 3 children were born In middle life he became a member of the Iowa Center Evangelical church and for forty-five year he lived a faithful Christian life.
"Almost seven years ago George was confined to his bed on account of a fractured hip. He was patient. He was tired. He waited for his call. On Jan. 1st, 1944 he died, age 87 years, 9 months, his attentive daughters, Mrs. Lillie Andrews, at whose home he passed away and Mrs. Edna Belcher and children and nineteen great grand-Mrs. Jim Fry. Also surviving are two brothers, Tom of St. James, Minn., and Harry of Butterfield, Minn., and one sister, Mrs. Rowena Hormel of Maxwell, twelve grandchildren.
SUBMITTER'S NOTE: George Smith married 2 times: (1) to Susan Kitchen on 30 July 1874 in Story County, Iowa. She died on 4 September 1875 at Iowa Center, Story County, Iowa. They had no known children. He married (2) Clara Minnie Dolph on 11 October 1879 in Story County, Iowa.
