THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, July 30, 1931, page 1. "MAXWELL MAN SUICIDES AT HIS HOME TUESDAY - E. D. Flickinger Commits Suicide by Shooting at His Home Here. Funeral Thursday Afternoon. E. D. Flickinger, 60, lifetime resident of this community and of Maxwell for the past twelve years, committed suicide at his home here Tuesday afternoon by both shooting and hanging, although it was apparent that the shot caused his death. The act was committed about 3 o'clock while Mr. Flickinger was alone in the house. Mrs. Flickinger was in the country at the time assisting in cooking for threshers and her husband was to have gone for her in the car. Instead he asked Miss Helen Rupp to go and upon their return Mrs. Flickinger found his lifeless body hanging in the stairway. It is evident that the act had been carefully planned, the rope being fastened in the garret and after the shot was fired into his brain he fell to the end of the rope with his feet about six inches from the floor. Mr. Flickinger has been despondent for some time and it is thought that brooding over imaginary ills had probably caused him to commit the rash act. The coroner was called but decided that no inquest was necessary as it was plainly a case of suicide. Deceased is survived by his wife, son Claire, daughter, Ruth, grandson, Mr. Flickinger has been despondent** of Ames, and Fred L., of Nevada. Funeral services will be held at the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. DeLoss Marken, of Des Moines, former pastor of the Maxwell Church of Christ, will deliver the sermon and the services at the grave will be in charge of Herald Lodge, No. 455, A. F & A. M., of this place, of which he was a member. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the stricken family." **Editorial note - typed as the original newspaper article.
