Funeral Services Held at Maxwell for Late I. N. Smith

Maxwell, March 15 -- Funeral services for I. N. Smith were held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Methodist church, with the Rev. Judson T. Perkins in charge. Mrs. Ray Gooden sand three songs, "Have Thine Own Way, Lord" "Gathering Home One By One" and "Good Night Here, But Good Morning Up There," with Mrs. Gerton N. Nelson at the piano. The pallbearers were Emmet Brown, Emmet Smith, Clyde McCord, E. L. Wood, Leslie Coughenour and J. R. Vallandingham, Jr. The floral offerings were many, and very beautiful.The scripture lesson included the 90th Psalm and 21st chapter of Revelations.
Burial was made in the Evergreen cemetery at Iowa Center.
Isaac Newton Smith, son of Ephraim and Lucinda Smith, was born in Indiana on October 20, 1855, and died at his home in Maxwell on March 12, 1940 at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 22 days. He had been in failing health for some time.
When he was a small child, his parents came to Iowa and settled in Story county. Mr. Smith had spent the rest of his life in this part of the county. When a young man he united with the United Brethren church in the Dalton neighborhood After the closing of that church, the records were kept in the Collins United Brethren church. He was always devoted to his family.
On May 15, 1880, he was united in marriage to Merrilla Jane Rinehart at Newton. To this union two sons and two daughters were born, Everitt E., Curtis L., and Gracy D. died several years ago, while Lorah E. still survives. His wife died on May 25, 1911.
On April 26, 1930, he married Mrs. Mary DeBartella at Nevada who still survives.
Surviving are his wife; one daughter Mrs. Lorah E. Hickman of San Gabriel, California; one sister, Mrs. Jane Haynes of Paramelle, S. D.; two grandsons, Verl L. ad Rossalynn Brouhard of Norwalk, Ohio; three step-daughters, Mrs. Roscoe Prichard of Maxwell; Mrs. M. F. Ohwieler of Fort Worth, Tex., and Mrs. Walter Schmellik of Colo; one step-son, Durwood Berns of Nevada and five step grandchildren. Many other relatives and friends also mourn his death.
