Funeral Services Held at Huxley For Nels Helland

Special to the Journal.
Huxley, Feb. 12--Funeral services for Nels Helland were held at the Fjeldberg church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon following a prayer service at the home at 2 o'clock.

The services were in charge of his pastor, Rev. Perry Sampson, and he was assisted by Rev. Peder Buland of Story City, a friend of the family, who gave a brief message using the Norwegian language. The audience sang a hymn, "In Heavenly Love Abiding" and special music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bappe of Ames who sang before the sermon "God Will Take Care of You," and at the conclusion of the services, "Lord I'm coming Home." The choir sang "The Old Rugged Cross." In addition to the many beautiful floral offerings there were many gifts to the various branches of mission work given by relatives and friends of the departed.

Casket bearers were Charles Thomason of Des Moines, R. B. Helland, Morris Helland, La Verne Helland, Clark Helland and Soerley Helland. The remains were interred in the Fjeldberg cemetery. The following obituary was read.

Nels S. Helland son of Mr. and Mrs Severt Helland was born on the Helland homestead near Huxley, May 18, 1865. He died at his home in Huxley Feb. 5, 1942, after an illness of six years following a paralytic stroke.

He was united in marriage to Dena Frovik of Slater on Dec. 8, 1886. To this union five sons and one daughter were born. Sanford, Leonard, Lawrence and the daughter, Marie, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Edward of Huxley and Nelean of Tulsa, Oklahoma, a foster daughter, Miss Beatrice Walden of New York City, ten grandchildren, one brother, Martin Helland of Slater and one sister, Mrs. Esther Berhow of Huxley.

Mr. Helland was a lifelong member of Fjeldberg congregation. In his younger days he was engaged in farming on the Helland homestead, was active in the community and had a wide range of interests. Relatives from distance who were here for the funeral were Miss Beatrice Walden of New York City, N D. Helland of Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. Martha Oleson, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Oleson of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Richard Ashpole of Clarion, Mrs. Leland Allbaugh, Albert Kalsem, Mrs. Anna Heggen and Agnes, Mrs. Johanna Ersland, Cora Kalsem, Mrs. Martha Helland, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Berhow, Mrs. and Mrs. Walter Bappe, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Berhow, Mr. and Mrs. T. Egemo and Mrs. E. Cleveland of Ames, Mr. and Mrs. Thor Hegland of McCallsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Brit Evans of Polk City, Mr. and MRs. Herman Holland of Lake City, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Thomason, Mrs. James McConkie, Dr. and Mrs. F. F. Peel, Muriel and Darlene, Edward Frovick, Mr. and Mrs. Merlin H Kirkwood, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schmidt Roy Frovick and Miss Viola Walden, all of Des Moines.
