THE MAXWELL TRIBUNE, Maxwell, Iowa, Thursday, May 26, 1921, page 1, column 5. "OBITUARY. - John Thomas Dunlap was born in Hardin county, Ohio, July 15, 1844. At the age of twelve years he moved with his parents to Iowa, locating near Nevada, Story county where he grew to manhood. He came to Burt county, Nebraska, in 1864, spending a few months near Tekamah. From there he went to Denver. On account of an Indian uprising the territory of Colorado called for volunteers, he enlisted in Co. E. 1st Colorado mounted militia in 1860 and served until mustered out on April 29, 1865. He then returned to his home in Iowa. He was married to Miss Ida Bell, February __, 1872. To this union were born four children. He came with his family to Burt county in 1883 where he resided until 1904 when he moved to Minnesota. After the death of his wife in 1917, he spent a year and a half with his daughter in Decatur; the past two years he has been with his other daughter in Portland, North Dakota, where he died May 1, 1921, aged seventy-six years, nine months and fifteen days. He became a Christian very early in life being a member of the Riverside Baptist church at the time of his death and during the long years of his life led a blameless and upright life, always standing for the right in whatever community he lived. He was a good neighbor, kind friend and loving father. He departed this life with the full assurance that a loving Heavenly Father was waiting to welcome him to his eternal home. There are left to mourn his loss four children: Mrs. J. F. Smith, Portland, North Dakota; Mrs. C. E. Barlow, Decatur, Nebraska; Thomas H. Dunlap, Vancouver, British Columbia; Ernest A. Dunlap, Dominion City, Canada; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one brother, Hiram Dunlap, Elton, Wisconsin, and two sisters, Mrs. James Hall, Maxwell, Iowa, and Mrs. Dillie Tarbox, Anamosa, Iowa. Funeral service was held in Decatur, May 5th at the home of his daughter, conducted by Rev. Hancock, assisted by Rev. Graham, after which he was laid to rest by the side of his beloved wife in Hill Crest Cemetery."
