Funeral Services for Mrs. Victoria Smith

Collins, Dec. 5--Funeral services for the late Victoria Smith, who passed away Thursday afternoon, Nov. 26, 1942 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Carver of Collins, were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the U. B. Church with the Rev. Lloyd Patton in charge of the services assisted by the Rev. Lawrence Lee. A quartet composed of Mrs L. M. Hall, Mrs. Jesse Torry, E. S. Stuntz and Milton Hale, with Mrs. C. R. Stone at the piano, sang two songs, "The Old Rugged Cross," and "Sometime We'll Understand." The Rev. Patton sang as a solo, "God's Tomorrow." The floral offerings were arranged by Mrs. L. D. Holland ad Mrs. J. R. Armstrong. Interment was in the Evergreen cemetery at Collins by the side of her husband. The casket bearers, grandsons of the deceased were Orville Smith, Lester Smith, Kenneth Smith, Marian Smith, Richard Smith and Floyd Carver.

The following obituary was read at the services.

Victoria Bates, daughter of John A. and Miriam Bates was born in Jasper county, Iowa, February 12, 1857 and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Carver, Thursday afternoon, Nov. 26, 1942 at the advanced age of 85 years, 9 months and 14 days.

In her girlhood the family moved to the Collins community locating on the Bates homestead southwest of Collins.

She was united in marriage to David V. Smith of Jasper county in September of 1883. To that union seven children were born, three of whom preceeded her in death.

The family made their home here throughout their married life and it was here that the husband died on April 13, 1938. After his passing she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Carver.

She was a member of the Methodist Protestant church of Collins until it ceased to function and later transferred her membership to the U. B. church. She enjoyed the friendships she had made through the years and was greatly interested in the H. B. F. society, and organization of friends.

She is survived by four children, Oran and Elmer Smith of near Collins, Pearl Smith of Des Moines and Mrs. Eva Carver of Collins, two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Holmes of near Collins and Mrs. O. E. Bedell, Gilner, Neb., three brothers, Sherm Bates of near Collins, Grant Bates of near Nevada and John Bates of Hobart, Okla., eighteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren, many more distant relatives and a host of friends all of whom truly mourn her passing.
