Funeral Services For Wm. Evans At Collins Sunday

Collins, Dec. 20--Funeral services were held in Collins United Brethren church, Sunday afternoon for the late William E. Evans, who passed away Friday morning at Mitchellville. Services were in charge of the Rev. Ray Thompson, a former pastor, assisted by the Rev. Paul Varce.

A quartet composed of Mrs. Grainger Buck, Miss Callo Wood, R. A. Long and Tom Huntrods with Mrs. C. R. Stone as accompanist sang "In the Garden", "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Face to Face."

The many beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. Bradford Stevens and Mrs. Dale Huffaker. The pallbearers were Chas. Carr, J. E. Hale, Dewey Kern, Noah Hyatt, L. D. Holland and R. G. Patton. Graveside services were conducted by the Masonic order, interment being in Collins cemetery.

The following obituary was read at the services:

William E. Evans, son of Calvin and Martha Evans, was born on Sept. 22, 1876 and passed away Dec. 7, 1945 at the age of 69 years. He was the second child in a family of ten, three girls and seven boys. Two sisters and three brothers preceded him in death. Those surviving are Madison Evans of Los Angeles, Calif., Chas. Evans of Hillsboro, Ore., Mrs. Addie Harsh of Des Moines and Ray Evans of Collins.

He was united in marriage to Cleo Van*, Nov. 27, 1902 and to this union two children were born, both dying in infancy. Will and Cleo took Mayme Dell Evans, a niece into their home when she was six years of age and reared her as a child of their own.

Will was born on the old Evans homestead where Ray Evans now lives. He lived most of his life near Collins, moving to Mitchellville just four years ago. He joined the Methodist church at Rhodes and remained a true Christian throughout his life. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Cleo, Mayme Dell Butler, one granddaughter Elaine Butler, three brothers, one sister and host of more distant relatives and friends.

Those from a distance attending the services were Mrs. Addie Harsh, Wilbert Harsh, Mr. and Mrs. Orlan Mapel, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Howell of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Beal and Bobby of Stillwater, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Lamon Sanders of Marengo, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Van* of Manshester, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Fleshman and daughter of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Dawson of Ira; Mr. and Mrs. Burl Bell, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Bell of Greencastle; and Willis Evans of Maxwell.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: The wife of William E. Evans was Cleora Pearl VanVoltinbergh. She was the daughter of Lamon VanVoltinbergh and Lizzie Leamon. I have seen several spellings of this surname but have never seen it shortened to simply "Van" except in this obituary.
