Funeral Services Held Wednesday for Philip Allen Sowers

Funeral services for Philip Allen Sowers, 40, who passed away early Monday morning at the Mahaska hospital in Oskaloosa as the result of a traffic accident, were largely attended at Central Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30.

The Rev. James D. Ransom officiated at the last rites. Mrs. F. W. Cowgill was at the piano playing appropriate hymns. A great number of beautiful flowers banked the front of the church. They were arranged by Mrs. H. W. Bowers, Mrs. Max Frazier, Mrs. W. W. Fay and Mrs. E. P. Schindler.

The pall bearers, cousins of the deceased were Mac Allen, George Allen, Harlan Hopper and Alvin Nelson of Nevada and Sewell Allen and Philip Allen of Onawa.

Among those from out of town in attendance at the services were relatives and friends from Mason City, Burlington, Fort Madison, Buffalo Center, Onawa, New Providence, Ames, Des Moines, Story City, Roland and possibly elsewhere.

In the tragic passing of Mr. Sowers, those bereaved are given the sincere sympathy of all.

The following obituary was prepared and read by Reverend Ransom:

"Phillip Allen Sowers, son of Max and Sadie Allen Sowers, was born on a farm north of Nevada, April 16, 1906. He was graduated from the Nevada High School in 1924 and then attended the University of Iowa of 3 1/2 year.

On August 10, 1929, he was united in marriage to Harriett McCall. To this union were born two sons, Mark and Joe. In 1938 he moved his family to Fort Madison, where he has worked since that time. March 1st of this year he went to Ames to go into business with his twin brother, William Sowers, intending to move his family from Ft. Madison to Ames at the end of the school year.

On Friday, May 3rd on his way from Ames to his home to spend the weekend, he had an automobile accident--was critically injured--and was taken to a hospital in Oskaloosa. In spite of all that medical science could do, he passed away at 2:30 A. M. Monday, May 6.

Mr. Sowers had been a member of the Presbyterian Church in Nevada since he was 12 years old, and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, two sons, his mother, Mrs. Sadie Sowers and his twin brother, William, both of Ames, many other relatives and a host of friends."
