Funeral Services Held Friday for Jesse Armstrong

Zearing, July 10 -- Funeral services for Jesse Lycurgus Armstrong were held in the Church of Christ Friday June 27 at 2:30. Rev. George Biersborn of Liscomb, a life long friend, conducted the service.

The following obituary was read: Jesse Lycurgus Armstrong, son of Bennet and Malvina Armstrong, was born in Providence Township, Hardin county on December 27, 1867. When he was two years old, his parents moved to Liscomb where they resided until he was sixteen years of age. He attended the Jennings high school as a young man. He later attended the Albion Seminary then enrolled in Oskaloosa College. He came to Zearing December 27, 1885 at the age of eighteen where he clerked in the store known as the B. A. Armstrong Store. This store was sold to Hugh McConnell and Charles Thatcher. Jesse then ran a small grocery store.

On May 29, 1887 he married Lucy Williams and they moved to Ames where he worked for Bigelow and Smith about two and a half year. They then moved back to Zearing and he clerked in his father's store which was known as Armstrong and Son. He bought his father's store in 1915 and ran the store which was known as the Armstrong Mercantile Co. He closed out this store in 1932 and later went into the produce business at which he was working when a heart attack proved fatal. He passed away June 23 1947 at the age of 79 years, five months and 27 days. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on May 29, 1947.

He is survived by his wife and five children, fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The children are Dr. Dwight Armstrong of Albert Lea, Minn., Dr. Frank Lowell Armstrong of Rochester, Minn., Dr. Pearl McCrellis of Riverside, Calif., Mrs. Mabel Johnson of Zearing and Mrs. Bernice Becker of Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Two children preceded him in death an infant son Lloyd and Mrs. Olive Butler.

He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Nettie Delano of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. Leona Perry of Zearing.

Tho attending the service from out of town were Mrs. F. E. McCrellis of Riverside, Calif., Dr. and Mrs. Dwight Armstrong of Albert Lea, Minn., Dr. and Mrs. Lowell Armstrong of Rochester, Minn., Mrs. Belle Armstrong of Fargo, N. Dak., Mr. and Mrs. Marion Clemens, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Price of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Golly, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Beach of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Reese, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Clampitt of New Providence, Mrs. Anna Becker, Mrs. Walter plermeier of Melbourne, Mrs. Leo Mosteller of Clemens and Mrs. Ina Allen of Colo.
