Many Attend Services For Erick N. Waugh

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct 13, at the Erickson Funeral home and at the Salem Lutheran church in Roland for Erick N. Waugh, who passed away Oct. 10. The pastor, Rev. Olaf Holen, officiated at the services.

Music was furnished by O. S. Boyd, who sang "In the Garden" at the chapel and "Under His Wings" and "The Old Rugged Cross" at the church.

Pall bearers were Lloyd Halverson, Orville Twedt, Joe Swanson, Amos Cole, Iver Gjerde and Gilford Michaelson. Interment was made in the Roland cemetery. Two hundred dollars was given to missions and charitable organizations in his memory, besides a large number of floral offerings.

Obituary

Erick Nicholi Waugh, son of the late Rikka and Nels Waugh, was born on the Waugh farm north of Roland on December 6, 1883, and died at his home October 10, 1948, at the age of 64 years, 10 months and four days.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Salem Lutheran church and received his elementary education in the Roland schools. He attended St. Olaf college at Northfield, Minn., graduated from Iowa State college at Ames with the class of 1909, receiving his degree in Animal Husbandry. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity at Iowa State. His next two years ere spent in Mexico doing government work. After that he stared farming on the Waugh homestead, where he lived until seven years ago, when he moved one-half mile north and one-half mile east, where he passed away.

When Mr. Waugh was 12 years old he went with his father to Norway to visit his grandparents and other relatives.

In November 1914 he was married to Amy Gaard and to this union two children were born, Betty and Eric. Mrs. Waugh passed away in November, 1923.

On May 28, 1936 he was united in marriage to Celia Rierson and to this union two children were born, Richard and William.

For the past seven or eight years he had been in poor health, never regaining his health since a major operation at Rochester, Minn.

Survivors

He is survived by his wife; one daughter Betty (Mrs. Grant Quam) of Ames; three sons, Eric of Roland, Richard and William at home; two grandchildren, John Eric and Marilyn Amanda Quam of Ames, and one sister, Mrs. Bertha Hanson of Des Moines.

Preceding him in death were his first wife, Amy; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nels Waugh; two brothers, Nels and Fred, and two sisters, Valborg Waugh and Nellie Josendal.

Relatives from a distance who attended were Mrs. Bertha Hanson of Des Moiens, Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Gaard of Radcliffe, Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Rierson of Atwater, Minn., Mrs. Harry Block and Earl Rierson of Kandiyohi, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Dale Rierson of Jewell, Dr. and Mrs. Ostrom and Barbara, Mrs. Mabel Menzel, Mr. and Mrs. William Vasey, Mr. and Mrs. Ward Rierson, Mrs. Sivrie Kinsey, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Nessa and Tom, Jr., all of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Rierson, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Rierson and Mr. and Mrs. Russell Reed, all of Radcliffe, Mr. and Mrs. R. Rasmussen of Story City, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Gaard, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Ritland, Mr. Nels Nessa, Olive, Dwayne, Inger and Bertha Nessa, all of Garden City, Mrs. Bernice Waugh of Waterloo, Mrs. Verdun Ellefson of Van Horne, Iowa, and Mrs. O. C. Reed of Webster City.
