Final Services For Fred Charles Menzel

Funeral services for the late Fred Charles Menzel, former McCallsburg resident, were held Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 8 with prayer service at the William Tett home and at 2 o'clock at the Presbyterian church in McCallsburg with the Rev. Ransom officiating.

Music at the funeral was furnished by Mrs. Clyde Baumgardner and the songs "Abide With Me" and "Beyond the Sunset" were sung by Miss Catherine Craig and Mrs. Frank Nail.

Pall bearers were Irvin Morris, Ted Pearson, Chrissie Rasmussen, Chester Pearson, Clyde Baumgardner and Lyle Baumgardner.

Interment was made in the Nevada cemetery with the American Legion members in uniform assisting in the services and presenting the flag to Mrs. Menzel.

Several sums of money were given to different missions in his memory, besides a large number of floral offerings. The flowers were arranged by Mrs. Walter Rasmussen and Mrs. Lewis Larsen.

Obituary

Fred Charles Menzel passed away at his home in Los Angeles, Calif., Tuesday morning, Feb. 2, at 5:30. He had been in his usual health and was taken suddenly with a hear attack, so his death came as a sudden shock to his wife, Louise, his relatives and many friends.

The deceased, son of the late Frank and Minnie Menzel, pioneer residents of the McCallsburg community, was born Dec. 26, 1899, on the Menzel farmstead near McCallsburg, where he spent his early boyhood and attended the rural school nearby and was a member of the Johnson Grove church. He later moved into McCallsburg with his father and sister, Ruth, and was graduated from McCallsburg high school in 1917. Shortly following his graduation he was called to service in the first World War. In the spring of 1921 he went to California, which was since his home.

He was married to Louise Carillo on Aug. 19, 1922, in Los Angeles, where they established a home of their own at which place they have resided through their life together. To this union, Fred Robert, was born and passed away as the age of three months. They observed their 25th wedding anniversary at their home in Los Angeles two years ago and also by coming to Iowa to visit his many relatives and friends for a number of weeks, which proved to be their last reunion together.

Fred was a home lover and possessed with many fine qualities. His fine character and ever-ready smile made him everybody's friend. His sudden death brings sorrow to the entire community.

The remains of the deceased arrived in Iowa last Sunday morning, accompanied by his wife, Louise, and brother-in-law, Lester Fincham of Zearing who had flown out to be with them.

Surviving are the wife, Louise, four sisters, Mrs. Pearl Tett who was both a sister and a mother to him as the mother passed away in Fred's early childhood, Mrs. Grace Fincham, Mrs. Leila Boelk and Miss Ruth Menzel, one brother Ray Menzel, and a number of nieces and nephews, besides a host of friends.
