John Birkestrand* Rites in Huxley
Funeral services for John Henry Birkestrand, who passed away at the General hospital in Jewell on Wednesday, Feb. 15, were held from Fjeldberg Lutheran church in Huxley on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 2 p. m. with a short service in the church parlors for the relatives at 1:45 p. m. The rites were in charge of the Rev. M. Harold Rye.
Mrs. E. D. Hall sang two vocal numbers, "Behold the Hosts Arrayed in White" and "Come Ye Blessed of My Father." She was accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Orland Fjelland.
Gifts of money for missions, for the Lutheran Beloit Children's home in Ames, the Fjeldberg church address system and other benevolences were received as a memorial for the deceased.
Casket bearers were nephews of the deceased. Interment was in Fjeldberg cemetery.
Obituary
Henry Birkestrand was born on Feb. 16, 1872, on the Birkestrand homestead, south of Huxley and passed away Feb. 15, 1950, at the General hospital in Jewell at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 29 days, having been in failing health for many years.
He spent 14 months in Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines and had been a patient in the Jewell hospital only eight days prior to his death.
He was baptized and confirmed in Fjeldberg church and a lifelong member and always faithful to his church and to the community in which he lived.
Surviving are two brothers, Wier and Albert of Huxley; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Hulderson of Huxley and Mrs. Nettie Kloster of Minneapolis, Minn., and many other relatives and friends.
Relatives and friends attended the rites from Minneapolis, Minn., Mason City, Knoxville, Webster City, Eagle Grove, Des Moines, Roland and Sheldahl.
*The deceased is actually Henry Johnson Birkestrand. He was the son of John W. Johnson and Anna Martha Olson Lee. His family headstone in Fjeldberg Cemetery at Huxley, Iowa is engraved BIRKESTRAND JOHNSON. John and Anna had 13 known children. Some of their children used the surname Johnson and some used the surname Birkestrand.
