Last Rites Held In Roland for J. Christian
Funeral services for the late J. A. Christian were held at the Bergen Lutheran church at Roland on Wednesday afternoon of last week, with his pastor, Rev. Olaf Holen in charge; interment was in the Roland cemetery.
A prayer service was held at the home prior to the cemetery at the church.
O. S. Boyd sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Face to Face" at the church. The casket bearers were Weston Olson of McCallsburg, Sam Nelson, Jessie Quam, Elliott Thompson, Knut Mehus and Floyd Larson.
Death came as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage suffered at Mr. Christian's home in Roland.
Jacob Albert Christian, 76, was born on a farm four mile south of Roland on Dec. 7, 1873, and was the oldest son of 14 of Charles and Ellen Christian.
He was married to Lena Skromme on Nov. 4, 1904. They have always lived in the Roland community; he owned and operated a harness repair shop for number of years, and the family spent 13 years on a farm east of town.
In 1930 they moved to Roland, where Mr. Christian was employed for many years at the Skromme hatchery.
Survivors
Left to survive are his wife, three sons, Chester, Maynard and Richard of Roland, and one daughter, Mrs. Jon Zumsteg of Santa Barbara, Calif., eight grandchildren, one brother Clarence of Minneapolis, Minn., and three sisters, Mrs. H. O. Christian of Kenyon, Minn., Mrs. Peter Tolberson of Willmar, Minn., and Mrs. Charles Hummell of Cedar Falls.
He was preceded in death by one son, Herbert.
The daughter, Mrs. Zumsteg, and a sister, Mrs. Tolberson were unable to attend. Those coming from a distance were from Kenyon and Minneapolis, Minn., Scranton, Newark, Ill., Jewell, Jefferson, Boone, Colo, Nevada, Radcliffe, Story City and McCallsburg.
Circle No. 3 of the Salem Lutheran church served lunch to the relatives following the services in the cemetery.
