Yvonne (Wander) Martin
July 14, 1929 - November 22, 2019Yvonne Lorraine Wander Martin, daughter of William Wander and Blanche (Ostlie) Wander was born July 14, 1929 in Fayette County in Clermont, Iowa. She passed away November 22, 2019 at the age of 90. She was baptized and confirmed at the West Clermont Lutheran Church. At the age of two the family moved back to the Wander Farm located between Clermont and West Union. William died in 1941. Blanche farmed for two more years, had a farm sale, and along with Yvonne moved to the town of West Union, Iowa.
After graduating from West Union High School in 1947 Yvonne attended Upper Iowa University in Fayette. She graduated with a Two-Year Normal Degree and taught elementary school at Westgate, Iowa. She met Walter Martin at Upper Iowa and they were married at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in West Union, Iowa in 1951. To this union five children were born: Greg, Kim, Scott, Cary, and Chris. They lived in Oelwein, Iowa for several years before moving to Nevada in 1964.
In 1966 she received a nursing degree from DMACC and was employed as a nurse at the Story County Hospital which is now known as the Story County Medical Center in Nevada for several years.
In 1980 she was employed as a technician and “fill-in nurse” at the National Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa. In 1985 she was transferred to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory and worked as a technician in the technical support area until her retirement in 1996.
Yvonne was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church. She enjoyed many hobbies, interests, and activities throughout her life. Her greatest joy was her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents. Surviving is a son Gregory (Carol) of Marion, Iowa, a daughter Kim Burnett (Lynn) of Ames, Iowa, a son Scott (Tatis Sempere) of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, a son Cary (Sherri) of Nevada, Iowa, and a son Christian of Ames, Iowa. She is also survived by grandchildren; Elizabeth, Andrew, John, Vanessa, Benjamin, Leigh, Celena, Derek, Axel and Jordy Arnold Sempere, Sayer, Tyler, Chris and Adam Cox, Chandler and Hana, and several great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sister-in-law Pat Mayhew (Jim) of Indianola, three nieces; Renee Konrad (Dean) of Cedar Rapids, Vicky Edwards (Dave) of Chariton, and Toni Irving (Steve) of Chariton, and many cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 29 at Memorial Lutheran Church (701 11th Street) in Nevada with Pastor Duane Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery in Nevada. Family will greet friends beginning at 9 a.m. at the church.
