Obituary From Boeke Funeral Homes, Hardin County, Iowa.

David Alan Henderson
June 5, 1955 - December 3, 2019

David Henderson, age 64, of Story City, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

David Alan Henderson was born on June 5, 1955 to Melburn and Marjorie (Meimann) Henderson of rural Story City, IA. Dave graduated from South Hamilton High School in 1973. From there, he attended the General Motors training program in Omaha, NE. Dave worked as a mechanic at Munsen Garage until he opened H & H Automotive with Bob Hill in 1975. He enjoyed being a member of the Bob Hill race team for many years. Dave had a farrow to finish hog operation on the side while working as a mechanic. He pursued his passion for farming in 1983 after his father passed away. Dave married Shari Smith on November 20, 1987 and they were blessed with two children Clint and Kelly.

Dave's strong work ethic, along with his partnership with his brother Dallas, allowed his successful grain and livestock operations to expand each year. From the very beginning, it was Dave’s dream for Clint to be an integral part of the family business. Clint was driving equipment before he could even see over the steering wheel. Dave instilled a deep love for farming in his son, he truly was his Dad’s right-hand man on the farm, and together, the two worked tirelessly toward their goals.

Through the years the daily operations grew to include other extended family members Kevin and Justin Baldus. Dave’s vision and fortitude provided great opportunity for his “farm family”- he always recognized and appreciated the value of the many, hardworking good people that helped “get the job done”.

Dave’s devotion to his ‘farm’ family was matched only by his love for his immediate family. Dave shared a special bond with daughter Kelly, who adored her Dad. The two spent many happy hours in his shop with their dogs Charlie, Dewey and family favorite Bud. Dave was a wonderful father and was overjoyed when he became a grandfather to Brooklyn and then Blake. All work would stop when they would show up….so Grandpa Dave could take them on ranger rides, help them explore his shop, and of course, play with tractors. Dave made sure each of the kids had pedal tractors at an early age - pink for Brooklyn and orange for Blake.

Dave had a great interest in collecting old tractors and meticulously restored many over the years. He shared his passion with the public, often driving his tractors in parades and judging Restored Tractors at the Iowa State Fair.

Dave died peacefully on December 3, 2019 surrounded his wife, family, and friends at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa after battling cancer. Dave is survived by his wife of 32 years Shari (Smith) Henderson of Story City, IA, children Kelly Henderson of Story City, IA, Clint (Laura) Henderson of Radcliffe, IA, grandchildren Brooklyn and Blake, his mother Marjorie of Ames, IA, siblings Dallas (Donna) Henderson of Story City, IA; Darrel (Linda) Henderson of Randall, IA; Denise Nichols of Ames, IA; Dawn (Craig) Peter of Omaha, NE; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Bob and Arliss Smith of Ellsworth, IA and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mike and Marji Smith of Kellogg, IA and his nieces and nephews. Dave was preceded in death by his father, Melburn, in 1983 and a brother-in-law, Scott Nichols.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family for a memorial fund to be established.
