Rites in Story City For Peter Donhowe

Last rites for Peter C. Donhowe were held Wednesday afternoon May 3, from St. Petri Lutheran church in Story City with the Rev. S. T. Nelson officiating.

Mrs. Robert Kenny sang "The Lord's Prayer." The prayer service in the Larson-Peterson Funeral home at 1:30 was in charge of the Rev. I. Havneros.

Serving as casket bearers were Erling Donhowe of Hampton, Milford Johnson of Ankeny, Lawrence Donhowe, Olae Valen, Alfred Jacobson and Charles Fuller.

Obituary

Peter C. Donhowe, son of Ole and Madille (Saetre) Donhowe, was born in Franklin township on Sept. 2, 1884. He attended the rural school. In the year 1900 he graduated from the St. Ansgar Eminary, St. Ansgar, Iowa. The year 1900 and 1901 he attended Luther college, Decorah.

Mr. Donhowe had been active in business in Story City during the past almost 50 years. From 1909-1918 he was co-partner in the Donhowe-Charlson Clothing stores. From 1918-1923 he was cashier in the Story City bank. From 1923 to 1949 he had the Ford agency and garage in Story City. During this period from 1932 to 1942 he also managed the Donhowe Dairy farm.

During these years Mr. Donhowe also gave of his time and leadership in community and church affairs. He was a member of the Story City council for four years. He was instrumental in organizing the first Boy Scout troop in Story City in the '20's. During 1944 and 1945 he served as president of the Greater Community Congress. During these years the organization and solicitation for the Story City Memorial hospital was begun. He served on the hospital committee until his resignation the past year because of ill health.

In the St. Petri congregation where he was baptized confirmed, married and served throughout his life he was an active member. He served on the church council, the remodeling committee in 1939, the parsonage committee in 1919, building fund committee in 1943 and 1944 and in various other capacities in the congregation and Brotherhood.

Married In 1907

Peter was married to Olive Marvick on June 12, 1907. Seven children were born to this union Mrs. J. J. (Laurentia) Irwin of Albion, Mich., Joseph of Story City, Herbert of Chattanooga, Tenn., Charles of Webster City, Albert of Story City, David of Centerville and Paul, who gave his life in his country's service in 1943.

Mr. Donhowe passed away at his home in Story City, after a period of failing health on Sunday evening, April 30, at the age of 65 years, seven months and 28 days. He is survived by his wife, the six children, one brother, John, of Los Angeles, Calif., one sister, Mrs. Bertha Johnson, of Story City and 11 grandchildren.
