Obituary

Emma Jane Smay, born December 26, 1860, died after a short illness at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Emmet Holcomb of Indianola, Iowa, on Saturday, February 21, 1948, at the age of 87 years, one month and 26 days.

She was born near Indianapolis, Indiana, a daughter of David and Sarah Jane Smay and came to Iowa with her parents at the age of two. Since that time she has been a resident of Story, Howard and Warren county. On March 31, 1889 she was united in marriage at the home of her parents near Johnson's Grove to William James Mead who preceded her in death, June 29, 1924, at Fernald, Iowa.

To this union were born two daughter, Mrs. Ruth Holcomb of Indianola, Iowa, with whom Mrs. Mead had made her home for the past 23 years and Mrs. Beth Ludwig of Boulder, Colorado.

She also leaves three grandchildren, Wilbur Holcomb, Mrs. Lillian Robb, and Mrs. Laura Cornell, and one great-grandson, Larry Gene Cornell.

The only surviving brother is Wesley G. Smay of Parsons, Kansas, who faithfully came to visit his sister at regular intervals and arrived for the funeral.

Mrs. Mead was a member of the Johnsons Grove church since a small child and when she lived near here was a regular attendant. She missed going to church after her health failed.

She was a faithful and loving mother and enjoyed having her family and friends coming in to visit with her.
